She writes a nationally syndicated pet care column and magazine articles, published two books on pet care, and developed and taught a course on veterinary medicine for pet people. She established a program to provide foster care for pets affected by domestic violence, has served on numerous animal-related boards of directors, and volunteers with national, state and local animal rescue organizations, shelters and emergency response teams. She then went on to attend SUNY Delhi to obtain her Associates in Veterinary Technology. After becoming an LVT in New York in 2016, she moved to Charlotte, NC and obtained her RVT while pursuing her dream of working in emergency medicine. In 2020 she relocated to the Raleigh-Durham area to join the emergency and critical care department at Blue Pearl in Cary, NC. Working alongside three criticalists she was able to obtain her VTS(ECC) in 2021. Over the last year she has transitioned into a leadership role as the emergency and critical care technician manager. In her spare time she loves to use the knowledge she has gained to help those in need, and give back to the community. She loves to volunteer with DEGA as she often meets the most kind and gracious owners and pets. She feels the human animal bond is an incredible thing and allowing those who have fallen on hard times to continue caring for their beloved pets is an incredible feeling. He chases balls, goes on walks, and helps organize and oversee all things clinic related. He is not a fan of beds, including the luxurious cat couch purchased specifically for him. Because of this, he sleeps on our stainless steel prep table in the GHON surgery trailer at night (do not even try to get him to sleep on one of his many beds). He nonstop purrs, loves to be scratched, and is so happy to have a place to call home. He has undergone extensive training during his year on the street and feels that he has developed the skills to train any other clinic cats that may come along. He has proven this by taming many a feral cat that has been trapped. These cats and kittens that are normally terrified, suddenly become happy and relaxed when they see Geraldeen. This in turn has caused stenotic, or narrowed, canals which has allowed a lot of waxy exudate to get trapped. Not quite two hours later, the owner brought him back because he was having a reaction showing hives and redness. Dr Gessner and Dr Knutzen are both experienced ER doctors and immediately gave him a diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and a dexamethasone (steroid) injection. Within 30 minutes after treatment, he was showing great improvement and slowly returning to normal. The picture on the left was before and the picture on the right was during his reaction.
